President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis, fondly known to Filipinos as “Lolo Kiko.”
“Ibang klase si Pope Francis. That’s really sad. I love this Pope. The best Pope in my lifetime as far as I’m concerned,” Marcos Jr. said during a meeting on Monday, April 21.
Pope Francis gave his final public appearance at St. Peter’s Square with a message of “Happy Easter.” He passed away at 7:35 a.m. local time on Monday, according to Vatican News. He was 88.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, he was elected Supreme Pontiff on March 13, 2013. He was the first Jesuit and the first pope from the Americas.
In 2015, Pope Francis made a historic visit to the Philippines after Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) devastated parts of the country. He celebrated Mass at the Manila Cathedral and at the University of Santo Tomas. In Tacloban City, he held a moving outdoor Mass in the middle of heavy rain and strong winds.
Throughout his visit, he spoke with priests, religious leaders, youth, and public officials. His message centered on caring for the poor, the marginalized, and the environment.
Filipinos will remember Pope Francis for his compassion and his call to live out the Gospel by serving those on the margins and protecting creation.IMT
