Dr. Edwin Mercado, a US-trained orthopedic surgeon with 35 years of experience in hospital management, was sworn as the new President and CEO of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) in Malacañang on Tuesday, February 4.
Mercado replaced Emmanuel Ledesma, Jr.
Since March 2021, Mercado has served as vice chairman of Mercado General Hospital/Qualimed Health Network.
Under his leadership, the network expanded into a national chain, with four general hospitals, six multi-specialty clinics, two surgery centers, 150 primary care clinics, a paramedical college, and a 400-doctor practice group.
Mercado holds a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of the Philippines (1987) and a Master of Medical Sciences in Global Health Delivery from Harvard Medical School (2023). He also earned an Executive Master’s in Healthcare Administration from the University of North Carolina.IMT
