The flooding experienced in parts of Iloilo City on Tuesday, Aug. 29, was the “most severe” since 2008 when Typhoon Frank hit the metropolis, according to Mayor Jerry Treñas.

Heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon or habagat enhanced by Typhoon Goring triggered floods in 90 barangays of the city.

Of the number, 24 are in Jaro, 16 in Mandurriao, 13 in City Proper, 12 in Arevalo, and 10 each in La Paz and Molo.

The floods affected 8,442 families or 30,844 individuals, data from the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) showed.

According to the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), the floods reached as high as six feet in some affected areas.

In a report by the Philippine News Agency, CDRRMO head Donna Magno said the amount of rain on Tuesday was almost equivalent to the one-month rainfall in August.

The rain gauge installed at the Jaro district health center as of 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday has registered 256-millimeter rainfall for 24 hours.

“The last time this happened, it was during the onslaught of Typhoon Frank. Fortunately, we are prepared for this. Immediate actions were taken to assist affected families,” Treñas said in a press conference.IMT
