Western Visayas welcomed 2025 in a “generally peaceful” way, according to the Police Regional Office (PRO-6).

“No major incidents directly related to the [New Year’s] celebration were noted,” PRO-6 said in a statement.

From December 16, 2024 to January 1, 2025, the region posted 907 crime incidents. The number was  lower by 28 percent to 907 from 1,164 in the same period a year ago.

Focus crimes, which include murder, homicide, physical injury, robbery, theft, rape and carnapping, also decreased. The number went down by 69 percent from 176 to 54.

Police Brigadier General Jack L. Wanky, PRO-6 director,  “lauded all police personnel across the region for their commitment and dedication towards their duties and responsibilities to delivering an excellent public service twenty-four hours a day.”

“We sincerely recognize all the stakeholders for their invaluable contribution in making the Holiday Season joyful and peaceful,” he said

“As we face the new year, it is with optimism that we can perform better as we are forging a stronger partnership and collaboration in all our peace and order and public safety endeavors,” Wanky added.

The region’s top cop assured the public that PRO-6 “will relentlessly execute its law enforcement operations against all forms of criminality.”

Wanky stressed that “those engaging in illegal activities will be answerable to their actions.”IMT
