More than 200 college students in the province of Guimaras fell ill after consuming spaghetti prepared by an “outside caterer.”
The victims, mostly from the College of Business and Management of Guimaras State University (GSU), experienced symptoms of food poisoning such as vomiting and abdominal pain.
They were rushed to Dr. Catalino Gallego Nava Provincial Hospital, Buenavista Emergency Hospital, and Guimaras Specialist Medical Center.
According to a report by radio station RMN-Iloilo, more than 1,400 packs of spaghetti were prepared for participants of the Business Innovators’ Zone Convention.
Of the number, about 800 packs were distributed during the event held in the town of Buenavista on Nov. 15.
The Buenavista police station said its investigation is ongoing over the alleged food poisoning.
“Ang sa mga sample na nakuha ng mga personnel ng RHU (Rural Health Unit), ipapa-laboratory pa nila. [Dito malalaman] kung ano [talaga] ang dahilan ng pagsakit ng tiyan ng mga bata,” said Captain Rene Mercado, officer in charge of the police station.
In a statement, GSU said the affected students are “closely being monitored” and urged others who felt unwell to seek immediate medical attention.
The University also vowed to provide assistance for medical expenses incurred.
“Our priority remains the welfare and recovery of our students. We are investigating the incident and will take necessary measures to prevent similar occurrences,” it stressed.
Meanwhile, Governor JC Rahman Nava assured that the victims will be provided with necessary medical intervention.
He said the Provincial Health Office and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) are extending logistical support, including transportation, and conducting investigation into the incident.IMT
