A total of 424 public schools in Western Visayas suspended face-to-face classes on Tuesday, Dec. 10, due to the ashfall caused by the “explosive eruption” of Mt. Kanlaon.
Based on data from the Department of Education (DepEd-6), 273 schools did hold in-person classes in Negros Occidental, 53 in Guimaras, and 98 in Iloilo.
The schools shifted to an alternative delivery mode (ADM) of learning.
According to DepEd-6, the suspension affected more than 213 thousand learners in the region.
On Monday afternoon, Dec. 9, Kanlaon in Negros Island erupted and “produced a voluminous plume that rapidly rose to 3,000 meters above the vent and drifted west-southwest.”
This prompted the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) to raise the alert level to 3, which indicates magmatic unrest.IMT
