More than 500 fire incidents occurred in Western Visayas in the first two months of 2024, data from the  Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP-6) showed.

From January 1 to February 29, BFP-6 registered 579 fire cases. Of the figure, 236 were recorded in Negros Occidental 226 in Iloilo, 63 in Antique, 27 in Aklan, 19 in Capiz, and eight in Guimaras.

Fire Chief Superintendent Felixberto Abrenica, BFP-6 director, said most of the incidents were non-structural fires.

This month, the country observed Fire Prevention Month to raise awareness and promote fire safety.

To prevent fire, BFP advised the public to unplug appliances when not in use; avoid plugging multiple appliances into an extension chord; keep an eye on burning candles; and double check stoves and ovens after use.IMT
