P2 jeepney fare hike takes effect July 1

Starting July 1, the minimum fare for public utility jeepneys (PUJs) nationwide will be at P11 and P13 for modern jeepneys.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) approved on Wednesday, June 29, the petition filed by transport groups to increase the munimum jeepney fare by P2.

The groups noted that the last time the minimum PUJ fare was raised to P10, the price of diesel was P48.90 per liter, way lower compared to P88.65 per liter based on the June 21 Oil Price Monitor by the Department of Energy (DOE).

“Taking into account the P32.35 per liter price increase of diesel as compared to October 2018, the P1 provisional increase granted on 8 June 2022 is grossly insufficient, inadequate, and can hardly be felt by PUJ operators,” the petition read.

There will be no increase in fare for succeeding kilometers after the four-kilometer distance covered by the minimum fare, according to LTFRB’s latest order.

All PUJs still need to grant 20 percent discount to senior citizens, students and persons with disabilities.
