The construction of a bridge linking Panay Island to the island province of Guimaras is set to start this year, according to Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas.

In a press conference, Treñas, who also chairs the Infrastructure Development Committee of the Regional Development Council (RDC-6), said President Bongbong Marcos assured that the construction will begin within the year.

Marcos convened a meeting with key members of  RDC-6 at Casa Real de Iloil on Feb. 13.

The Panay-Guimaras bridge (Section A) is part of the Panay-Guimaras-Negros (PGN) Island Bridges project. It will connect Leganes in Panay to Buenavista in Guimaras.

Spanning 13 kilometers, the first section is projected to cost P57 billion. It is expected to be completed by 2028.

Meanwhile, the project’s Section B involves the construction of a bridge between the islands of Guimaras and Negros.

The second section will connect San Lorenzo, Guimaras to Pulupandan, Negros Occidental. It is estimated to cost P170 billion.

In October last year, the Philippines and South Korea sealed financing a deal for the construction of the PGN Island Bridges.IMT
