Pandemic closes 90 private schools in WV

Many private elementary and secondary schools in Western Visayas will not reopen this year, according to the Department of Education (DepEd).

Based on data from DepEd, 748 out of 14,435 private schools nationwide have decided not to operate for school year 2020-2021 due to low enrollment of students.

Of those schools that will suspend their operations, 90 are in Western Visayas while others are in Central Luzon (141), Calabarzon (121), and Metro Manila (96). 

The suspensions have affected 286 teachers and 2,117 students in Western Visayas. 

The region has a total of 1,138 private schools. 

“They are saying that it would be temporary closure. But if the situation improves next year, they will reopen,” said DepEd Undersecretary Jesus Mateo.

Meanwhile, the opening of classes in public schools is set on October 5, 2020.IMT
