President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reaffirmed the Philippine government’s commitment to its obligations with the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).

“As (Justice) Secretary (Crispin) Remulla explained before, we have obligations to Interpol and we have to live up to those obligations,” Marcos Jr. said in media interview when asked about the country’s cooperation with Interpol in relation to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Earlier, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin said the government would not prevent former president Rodrigo Duterte from submitting to the jurisdiction of the ICC should he choose to do so.

The ICC is currently investigating the campaign against illegal drugs of the Duterte administration.

However, Bersamin also noted that local authorities would consider cooperating with Interpol if the ICC requests the assistance of the international anti-crime body.

When asked whether the government’s cooperation with Interpol would facilitate Duterte’s appearance before the ICC, the President said, “We’ll see how far it goes.”

The government, he added, still has to determine what actions the ICC will take in Duterte’s case.IMT
