Senator Grace Poe emphasized the crucial role of print media in providing credible information in the age of fake news.

“Print remains essential in media today, because it is seen as a bastion of accountability and responsibility,” Poe said at the United Print and Multimedia Group’s induction of officers and general membership meeting.

She noted that while social media is known for its speed and viral nature, where misinformation spreads quickly, print media upholds ethical practices, particularly fact-checking.

“This is probably why print media is trusted and can confidently brand themselves as the guardians of truth,” according to her.

Poe pointed out that traditional print and broadcast media have been more resilient to fake news accusations compared to social media platforms and digital outlets. However, she acknowledged that the digital world impacts the non-digital arena, influencing public opinion, product sales, and elections.

“Freedom of information and access to accurate and correct information are vital to a democratic state such as ours. The power to choose and choose wisely is built upon the premise that ordinary citizens are presented with all the facts,” she said.

The senator also reminded that while online platforms like Facebook and TikTok spread information, the responsibility for content lies with journalists, bloggers, and ordinary users.

“The same is true for print media. Your role has not been diminished with the passage of time and technology. It is still is as important today as it was yesterday,” added Poe.IMT
