Councilor Plaridel Nava wants to regulate the use of the word “Dinagyang” “in any event” in Iloilo City.
The word, according to Nava, is already abused by unscrupulous groups and personalities for their own personal gain and benefit.
“It has been used in other events that involve monetary consideration such as fund-raising activities and money-making ventures,” the councilor’s proposed ordinance stated.
The ordinance, which aims to “protect the integrity” of the Dinagyang Festival, was approved on first reading by the City Council on Tuesday, Jan. 18.
The measure requires those who want to use the term to submit a written request to the Mayor’s Office.
They must also secure a letter of recommendation from the Iloilo Festivals Foundation Inc., disclose the nature and the rationale of the event, and present proof of legal personality fo the applicant.
“The mayor or his duly authorized representative is empowered to cause the outright stoppage of any event that uses ‘Dinagyang’ that did not comply with the preceding,” the ordinance stated.
“Any violation of the provisions of this Ordinance shall be subject to the corresponding penalties,” it further stated.IMT
