Speaking to judicial leaders, Supreme Court Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo highlighted the transformative potential of technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), for the justice system.
At the Conference of Chief Justices of Asia and the Pacific in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Gesmundo explained AI could help streamline administrative tasks, speed up legal research, and even predict court outcomes.
He shared examples from other countries where AI is already used to examine evidence and prepare case files.
Gesmundo also mentioned the Philippine Supreme Court’s Strategic Plan for Judicial Innovations 2022-2027, which includes AI-driven programs aimed at making courts efficient and accessible.
However, he warned against relying too much on AI, pointing out that it lacks the human qualities needed for fair justice, such as empathy and ethical judgment.
“Courts should still be populated with human judges if we are to expect that empathy and compassion would still go into the consideration of granting equitable remedies,” the chief magistrate said.IMT
