The Senate has approved Senate Bill No. 2816, which extends the term limit of barangay officials and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) members.

During the plenary session, 22 senators voted in favor of the bill, no abstention and negative votes.

Senator Imee Marcos, who sponsored the bill, explained that the longer term will allow barangay officials and SK members to better understand national and local issues and implement long-term initiatives at the community level.

Under the bill, barangay officials and SK members will serve four-year terms, with a limit of three consecutive terms in the same position. Voluntary office renunciation will not interrupt the term continuity.

Once passed, incumbent barangay and SK officials will remain in office until their successors are elected and qualified.

The next barangay and SK elections will be held on the first Monday of October 2027, with subsequent elections every four years.

“The term of office of barangay officials and members of the SK elected subsequent to the effectivity of this Act shall commence on the first day of November following their election,” the bill stated.

Those serving a third consecutive term will be ineligible to run in the scheduled election.IMT
