President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has appointed Senator Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara as the new secretary of the Department of Education, effective July 19, 2024.

Marcos Jr. announced Angara’s appointment during a Cabinet meeting in Malacañang on Tuesday, July 2.

The son of former Senate President Edgardo Angara will replace Vice President Sara Duterte, who resigned as DepEd chief on June 19.

“Senator Angara has an extensive legislative history, having championed significant educational reforms since joining the Senate of the Philippines in 2013,” the Presidential Communications Office said.

“His notable legislative achievements include the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act and the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 (K to12),” it added.

In a statement, Angara committed to working with all sectors of society “to ensure that every Filipino child has access to quality education.”IMT
