Taxi operators want the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to allow them to impose fixed rates on passengers for out-of-town trips.

Lawyer Jun Altura, LTFRB-6 legal counsel, said taxi operators decided to file a petition seeking to legalize fixed out-of-town trips.

The petition, he said, can be submitted either to LTFRB’s regional office in Iloilo City  or central office in Manila.

The operators came up with the decision during their recent meeting with  LTFRB-6 regional director Richard Osmeña.

The meeting was called by Osmeña after a local tourist shared a video on Facebook accusing a taxi driver of charging him a fixed rate for a trip from Mandurriao district in Iloilo City to the Iloilo International Airport in Cabatuan, Iloilo province.

In a previous report by IMT NEWS, the Land Transportation Office (LTO-6) said metered taxis are prohibited from imposing a fixed rate even if the destination is out of town.

This practice is a “violation of transportation regulations” and those caught doing so could be punished with suspension and revocation of their driver’s licenses, according to the agency.IMT
