The number of tourists who spent the Holy Week break in Boracay Island, Malay, Aklan decreased this year, data from the local government showed.
The Malay Tourism Office logged 56,134 tourist arrivals from Ash Sunday, March 24 to Easter Sunday, March 30. The highest was registered on Maundy Thursday, March 28, at 18, 898 tourists.
The figures were lower compared to 62,241 visitors last year, of which more than 16,000 arrived on Maundy Thursday.
Mayor Floribar Bautista cited the scorching weather as one of the factors for the decrease in arrivals.
“Others might have opted to travel to cool areas or preferred destinations nearer to them, so they don’t need to spend too much time traveling,” he said.
In the whole month of March this year, the tourism office registered a total of 191, 326 tourists, higher compared to 174, 000 in February and 173,000 in January.IMT
