The Iloilo City Government launched on Thursday, Jan. 16, its first-ever Traffic Discipline Zone, which comprises the 14-kilometer stretch of the Senator Benigno Aquino Avenue (Diversion Road) in Mandurriao district.
This, Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said, would help address the worsening traffic congestion and the increasing number of road crashes in the city.
Treñas was glad that the initiative has finally been put into effect.
“Kinanglan naton ipakita nga sa isa ka lugar sa syudad kon tuod tuodon naton maobra naton ang tuod-tuod nga pagpadalagan sang karsada kag nagapati sa tanan nga traffic rules and regulations,” he said.
“We have to show that here in Iloilo, we follow traffic rules and regulations,” the mayor stressed.
All local traffic ordinances and the National Traffic Code will be enforced within the area 24/7.
According to Treñas, the full enforcement will take effect on Monday, Jan. 20.
The city government’s Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO) deployed personnel in the area with augmentation from Iloilo City Police Office, Land Transportation Office and Highway Patrol Group (HPG).
During the launch, LTO-6 Director Roland Ramos, ICPO director Col. Martin Defensor, and HPG head Col. Winston de Belen personally committed their full support to the city government in this undertaking.
“Pagsulod mo gid sa boundary sang syudad, masunod mo na dapat ang traffic rules and regulation. Amo na nga nagpangabay gid ako sang suporta sa tanan kag gapasalamat kita sa various agencies nga nagasuporta sa aton,” said Treñas.
The city government is eyeing to make the McArthur Drive in Jaro district its second Traffic Discipline Zone because of the volume of motorists and persistent traffic congestion in the area. IMT
