Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas said he is not in favor of arresting and detaining people who do not wear their face masks properly in public spaces.
“Luoy ta sa mga tawo. Damo na wala trabaho. Pigado na prisuhon pa,” said Treñas in an interview over radio station Aksyon Radyo-Iloilo.
“Ako katilaw na priso and I do not want it to anyone,” he added.
Instead of carrying out arrests, Treñas said he and Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) director Colonel Uldarico Garbanzos agreed to just impose penalties on those caught wearing their masks improperly.
According to the mayor, no arrests will be done in the city until the Department of Justice (DOJ) issues the guidelines on President Rodrigo Duterte’s order.
Duterte, during his public address on May 5,ordered the police to arrest, detain, and investigate anyone wearing a face mask improperly.
“Eh kapag ganun at ako dito hirap na hirap, pawala na yung pera natin sa banko at sige pa rin kayo na galaw nang galaw nang hindi tama, mapupunta talaga kayo sa istasyon,” he said.IMT
