Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas “strongly objects” the removal of historical figures from from the 1000-peso bill.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) recently introduced the new design of the P1,000 bill, which will be made from water and dirt-resistant polymer.

The new design features the Philippine eagle in front, replacing World War II heroes Vicente Lim, Josefa Llanes Escoda, and Jose Abad Santos.

Treñas sees no need to change the heroes in the bill. “We can change the bill without getting rid unnecessarily of our heroes.”

“I love our Philippine eagle as it symbolizes strength and purity in spirit. It is sad; however, that if we allow this then it will not be remote that we change our other heroes in the other bills with the carabao, the Maya bird, and maybe later on the with Philippine monkey,” he said.

“And then we will be known as the country of monkeys to our children and grandchildren,” he added.

According to BSP Governor Benjamin Diokno, the issuance of the new bill was approved by the Monetary Board (MB) and the Office of the President.IMT
