Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas has asked the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to “make a report” on the controversial Ungka II Flyover.

“It is about time that we are informed what are the plans of DPWH to resolve the issues affecting the flyover,” he said in a statement on Monday, Feb. 6.

Treñas, who serves as chairperson of the Regional Development Council’s (RDC) Infrastructure Committee, said the report will be presented during their meeting on Thursday, Feb. 9.

The mayor invited members of the local media to attend the meeting “so that we will all understand what DPWH is planning to do with this flyover,” which is located between na city and the town of Pavia.

Commuters on Monday opted to walk and use the defective flyover as a pedestrian overpass due to heavy traffic in the area.

The P680-million flyover, built by the Iloilo-based contractor International Builders Corp. (IBC), was fully opened to commuters on September 6 last year.

But the 453.7-meter structure was closed to traffic after almost two weeks due to vertical displacements or shifting observed in the flyover’s three piers or support structures that extend to the ground below.

In an interview with DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan on January 13 this year, he said they have yet to find the solution to the “sinking” flyover.IMT
