Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas on Monday, June 29, urged Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Francisco Duque III to step down from his post.

“I think it’s really about time for him (Duque) to voluntarily resign for the sake of the country,” Treñas said during their flag-raising ceremony.

The mayor critized the DOH’s handling of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

“The DOH has not done correct decisions since the start of this pandemic in the Philippines. That’s why were the country with the longest lockdown and yet the cases continue to go up,” Treñas said.

The country, as of June 28, recorded 35,455 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 9,686 recoveries and 1,244 deaths.

Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) showed that the country leading in the rise of COVID-19 cases in the entire Western Pacific region.IMT
