Mayor Jerry Treñas believed there are strong grounds to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte, following the testimonies and evidence presented during the quad committee proceedings.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Feb. 10, Treñas, a lawyer by profession, backed the position of former Senate president Franklin Drilon urging President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to call for a special session to convene the Impeachment Court.

“So I think, so far as the legal issues are concerned, once the president calls for a special session to approve some bills and, among others, take up the impeachment, the Senate is duty-bound by the Constitution to perform its constitutional duty and immediately take up these bills and also the impeachment,” Treñas said.

He also pointed out that the impeachment process provides Duterte with the opportunity to present her defense and counter the allegations against her.

Iloilo City Lone District Rep. Julienne Baronda, one of the lawmakers who endorsed the impeachment complaint last week, echoed similar sentiments.

In a statement, Baronda said the proceedings would allow Duterte to formally address the accusations, ensuring due process and helping to restore public trust in democratic institutions.

“This is an opportunity for her to clarify matters before the public and the legislature, and defend herself in a fair and impartial forum,” Baronda said.PNA
