Mayor Jerry P. Treñas is eyeing a total ban on boga, an improvised cannon commonly made of PVC pipes or empty tin cans, in Iloilo City.
“I will ask the City Council to review existing ordinances or enact the necessary legislation to regulate or prohibit the use, sale, and production of boga,” Treñas said in a statement.
“If no ordinance exists, I will push for one to ensure incidents like these are avoided in the future,” the mayor added.
From December 21, 2024 to January 1, 2025, Iloilo City Epidemiological and Surveillance Unit (ICESU) recorded seven firecracker-related injuries.
Of the number, more than half or four were caused by boga, which produces loud sounds when ignited.
Treñas urged the public to remain vigilant as reports indicated boga use and production continue beyond the holiday season.IMT
