Mayor Jerry Treñas is now leaving it up to schools in Iloilo City to decide on the suspension of their face-to-face classes amid intense heat exacerbated by the El Niño phenomenon.
In a press conference on Tuesday, April 16, Treñas said he would let school heads or administrators decide whether or not to suspend in-person classes.
“Indi na ko mag[issue executive order suspending classes in the city],” he told reporters.
In the past days, classes in all levels in the city were suspended by Treñas due to “extreme heat conditions.”
“May ara na rules ang DepEd (Department of Education) para sa suspension, ti sundon ta lang ina,” the mayor said.
“Kon intrahan ko naman na, mareklamo naman sila. Sige na lang sa ila, sila nalang decide,” he added.
Under Department Order 037 issued by DepEd in 2022, schools heads can suspend the conduct of in-person classes and shift to alternative delivery modes (ADM) in cases of extreme heat and other calamities.
On Monday, April 15, the city recorded a heat index of 44 degrees Celsius, the highest so far this year.IMT
