Mayor Jerry Treñas wants Calle Real, a historic street in Iloilo City’s downtown area, to be off limits to vehicular traffic on Sundays.

“I have requested the CMO (City Mayor’s Office) legal team to coordinate with the pertinent city council committees for a carless Sunday, even if initially twice a month at the Calle Real,” Treñas said.

“Proper consultations with the private communities affected and the other business groups will be made soon,” he added.

Officially named J.M. Basa Street, Calle Real (Royal Street) was declared by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines as a heritage zone in 2014.

This century-old street, also called the “Escolta of Iloilo,” is home to well-preserved colonial-era buildings.IMT
