With the expected influx of travelers this Holy Week, Senator Raffy Tulfo urged the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and related agencies to prioritize passenger safety.
At a Senate hearing on April 10, Tulfo stressed the need for the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to regularly inspect bus terminals and ensure buses are roadworthy.
He raised concerns after finding multiple violations during his own surprise inspections.
LTFRB Executive Director Robert Peig admitted the agency lacks staff for regular checks. But Tulfo insisted that officials should step out of their air-conditioned offices to see the real conditions passengers face and stop unfit buses from operating.
The senator emphasized the need to inspect key safety features like tires, brakes, and fire extinguishers. Peig agreed and said regional staff would be tasked with regular terminal checks.IMT
