Unclaimed stray dogs in Iloilo City will be disposed of through euthanasia or mercy killing.
These stray dogs were caught by the impounding team of the Office of the City Veterinarian roaming the city’s streets.
Euthanasia of stray animals is allowed under Republic Act (RA) 8485 or the Animal Welfare Act of 1998.
According to the law, euthanasia can be done subject to several conditions set by the Department of Agriculture.
City Veterinarian Dr. Tomas Forteza claimed that the dogs set to be euthanized pose dangers to residents and visitors.
The law defines euthanasia as “the process of painless death to dogs and other animals.”
Is there a way to save these dogs from being euthanized?
Mayor Jerry Treñas called on the public to adopt the impounded stray dogs.
He said they would coordinate with groups and individuals who are capable of and interested in adopting.
“Ang indi ma-adopt i-euthanized sila. Kinahanglan ta ini himuon para sa seguridad indi lang sang aton residente kundi pati man sang nagkadto diri sa syudad,” said Treñas.IMT
