Iloilo City officials have welcomed the appointment of Senator Sonny Angara as the new secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd).
According to City Mayor Treñas, Angara is a “very good choice for the position” vacated by Vice President Sara Duterte.
“He understands the needs of Local Government Units (LGU) when it comes to education,” he said in a statement.
“I have worked with Sen. Sonny Angara as Congressman. He has very good work ethics. He has my full support as education secretary,” Treñas added.
In a separate statement, City Representative Julienne “Jamjam” Baronda commended President Bongbong Marcos for appointing Angara, whom she described as “a qualified, experienced, and visionary leader.”
“I have known Senator Angara even before he became a senator, while I was a Sangguniang Kabataan president, so I know how passionate and dedicated he is to serving the people,” she said.
“I know very well, too, how he values education as a platform to help people uplift their lives. I have no doubt he will champion initiatives that would improve the state of our education,” Baronda further said.
Angara, a lawyer, is the son of the late Senate president and educator Edgardo Angara.
