Senator Joel Villanueva has filed a measure that aims to establish a Digital Nomad Visa, allowing remote workers to stay longer in the Philippines while working for foreign employers.

Inspired by his recent visit to Siargao, Villanueva sees this as a way to attract more digital nomads and boost tourism.

The Philippines ranked 7th among the fastest-growing remote work hubs in 2023, according to the World Economic Forum. The Department of Tourism reported a 9.15% increase in foreign visitors in 2024, totaling 5.95 million and generating P760.5 billion in tourism revenue.

“From our pristine beaches, green mountain ranges to our city’s vibrant urban hubs, each location in the Philippines provides unique advantages for remote workers,” Villanuave said in filing Senate Bill No. 2991.

The proposed visa will be valid for one year, renewable for another. Applicants must prove sufficient foreign income, valid health insurance, and a clean criminal record.

Over 50 countries already offer similar visas, and the senator from Bulacan hopes the Philippines will join them.

“Digital nomads spend money and therefore, would benefit the economy. The Philippines is a promising destination for those who embrace nomadic lifestyle and leverage technology to work remotely from outside their home country,” according to him.

“While they are not allowed to take local jobs, they can share their knowledge and best practices to the local communities,” he added.IMT
