More than 150 jins around Western Visayas joined in the 20th BONELL Regional Taekwondo Championship (Mayor Samuel T. Gumarin Cup) as part of the Palayag Festival of Buenavista, Guimaras, January 13-14, 2024.
After years of competition, the 20th edition of the tournament was supported by jins, coaches, and parents of Western Visayas.
Organized by Dr. Richard Gabayoyo, the event at the Buenavista Gym was jam-packed with competitive games.
Following impressive performances, Zarraga Do Jang was hailed as the overall champion, ahead of Seguiban taekwondo gym and NTG gym who ranked second and third places, respectively.
Gabayoyo, moreover, said it was one of the biggest taekwondo events in the island with more visiting jins traveling from their various towns and provinces.
“It was the best taekwondo event for Palayag Festival. Thank you to all who supported this event and for making this 20th edition a memorable one,” he added.
Meanwhile, Gabayoyo, who is the current National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) area head for Western Visayas, also conducted the Palayag Arnis event, with arnisadors coming from across the region. After the event, Iloilo City Sports Academy ruled the event.
Matti Bacolod team settled for second place while Zarraga ranked third. Gabayoyo also said that he’s thankful for the support of the Philippine Taekwondo Association RMC-6B, Players’ Center Sports and the Buenavista LGU.
“This is not the end of the events. We will continue this and hopefully, produce players who can represent Guimaras and the country as well,” he disclosed.
