Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri is calling on the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to raise public awareness about the dangers and legal consequences of fraternity hazing.

His call comes after the conviction of 10 Aegis Juris fraternity members for the hazing death of Atio Castillo and the death of another 18-year-old student in Nueva Ecija.

Zubiri highlighted the role that educational institutions should play in combating hazing culture.

He said that he will talk with DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara and CHED Chairman Popoy De Vera to release a “strongly worded” memo to schools and universities warning organizations, fraternities and other groups that hazing is a criminal act and will be punished under the law.

“Maybe we should look at the implementing rules and regulations, get the DILG involved, get the CHED involved, get the DepEd involved,” the Negrense solon said.

“I’ll talk to Sec. Sonny Angara to also maybe come up with strongly worded memorandum order for the DepEd. We’ll also ask Chairman Popoy of CHED to come up (with the same),” he added.IMT
